What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a substance that occurs naturally in our body. Hyaluronic acid found in the skin is responsible for its proper hydration. However, with time, it begins to decrease. The decrease manifests itself in a form skin dryness, loss of skin elasticity and in the appearance of first wrinkles. This is why hyaluronic acid treatments are so widely used in aesthetic medicine.
We differentiate two types of hyaluronic acid in dermatology – cross-linked and non-cross-linked. Non-crosslinked hyaluronic acid is used to moisturize the skin. It stays in the tissues from a few days to about a month. It is administered deep into the skin with a thin and short needle (mesotherapy) after applying local anesthesia in the form of an anesthetic cream.
Cross-linked hyaluronic acid is a typical filler. The time in which it remains within the tissue depends on the degree of its cross-linking, the site of administration and the individual characteristics of the patient. The more cross-linked hyaluronic acid, the longer it lasts in the tissue, while the effects of the filling with hyaluronic acid last on average from 6 to 18 months.
An additional role of hyaluronic acid is to stimulate the production of collagen in the skin and to inhibit its degradation. It translates into the fact that after using a hyaluronic acid based filler, even after it no longer remains in the tissues, the skin continues to look better than before the treatment.

The procedure
The procedure is performed by a doctor after collecting an in-depth interview. A carefully selected formula is administered with a needle or cannula to different depths of the skin, depending on the desirable effects. The procedure takes about 30 minutes and can be performed under local anesthesia or without an anesthetic ointment (the hyaluronic acid formula contains an anesthetic itself). The administered preparation effectively binds water and helps replenish the deficiency of hyaluronic acid in the skin, bringing a filling, modelling and moisturizing effect. Sometimes a small bruise or a slight swelling may appear right after the procedure.
